Breast Cancer and Older Women

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

FYI
Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among women in the United States after skin cancer and is the second leading cause of cancer death among women after lung cancer, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Nowadays, there are many resources for us to find information about breast cancer, which is crucial for promoting awareness and encouraging preventative measures. In fact, there is also more information tailored specifically for women who are older, highlighting the unique risks they face and the reasons to be even more vigilant about getting their yearly exams. Regular check-ups and screenings can significantly improve outcomes, as early detection is key in effectively managing this illness. The link below provides extensive information about the latest research, treatment options, and support groups, ensuring that women have access to the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.

BIPOC for the Aging Population

Always “News You Can Use” 🙂

Mental Health America focuses on Black, Indigenous People of Color for the month of July, highlighting the unique challenges and experiences of these communities. They provide comprehensive toolkits and various support information on their website, which I have shared extensively on my podcast to raise awareness and foster understanding.

In addition, Mental Health America website offers insightful information regarding the impact and disparities for BIPOC communities.

The Our Bodies Ourselves website provides videos and programs featuring elderly individuals who candidly discuss the challenges they have faced throughout their lives, shedding light on the importance of resilience and community support. You can listen and learn from their stories while reading that information at the link below, which I believe will enrich your understanding of mental health across generations and encourage empathy toward those navigating their own mental health journeys.

Summer Skincare Podcast

Always, “News You Can Use” 🙂

Although all year long we should use sunscreen, it seems to be particularly crucial during the hotter weather months when the sun’s rays are more intense. I found a podcast with Dr. Shari Lipner, a dermatologist, who shares valuable insights and expert advice on the importance of skin protection. Sometimes, it’s easier to listen to advice regarding sunscreen tips rather than reading all the variables, especially when she discusses when you should avoid the sun (between 10-2pm). She explains chemical and mineral sunscreens, and how to choose the right SPF for your unique skin type. She emphasizes not only the need for daily application but also the importance of reapplying throughout the day, particularly after swimming or sweating. Take care and stay beautiful with the right protection for your skin and health, as sunscreen is not just a summer necessity but an essential part of your daily skincare routine year-round.

Summertime Care :)

Hello Everyone!

It’s me with the “News You Can Use” 🙂
I often post this type of information on my HairBlues beauty blog, where I aim to empower my readers with tips and insights that enhance their beauty regimen. But this month, just in time for the summer sun, I thought I would share with my “elder beauties” how important it is to take extra care during the sun and fun months. The sun’s rays can be particularly harsh, and protecting our skin becomes essential as we enjoy those long, sunny days. Remember, it’s not just about looking good; it’s about maintaining our skin’s health and vitality. When you find a moment, take a look at the video below, where the CDC breaks down practical steps for nurturing your skin. Embrace the summer with confidence, knowing you are taking care of your most precious asset—your skin!
